MPhil. Building Technology

Postgraduate Degree
2 Years

The MPhil Building Technology Programme is a research-intensive, advanced academic course designed for professionals and scholars seeking to deepen their expertise in the innovative and evolving field of building technology. As the construction industry faces unprecedented challenges such as climate change, resource scarcity, and the need for sustainable urban development, the demand for cutting-edge research and technological innovation in building design, construction, and operation has never been greater. This programme is tailored for individuals who aspire to contribute to the field through groundbreaking research, critical analysis, and the development of new technologies and methodologies that address the future of the built environment.

Unlike traditional taught programmes, the MPhil in Building Technology emphasises independent research, enabling students to explore complex issues such as smart buildings, energy-efficient design, sustainable materials, digital construction technologies (e.g., BIM, IoT, and AI), and resilient infrastructure. By fostering a culture of inquiry and intellectual rigor, the programme prepares graduates to become thought leaders, educators, or high-level consultants capable of shaping the future of building technology.

Key features of the programme include:

Research Excellence: Students undertake a significant research project under the guidance of experienced academic supervisors, contributing original insights to the field of building technology.

Interdisciplinary Approach: The programme encourages cross-disciplinary research, allowing students to draw on fields such as architecture, engineering, materials science, and environmental studies to address complex challenges in building technology.

Industry Collaboration: Through partnerships with leading construction firms, technology providers, and government agencies, students have the opportunity to conduct research that addresses real-world problems and delivers practical, impactful solutions.

Advanced Skill Development: The programme equips students with advanced research methodologies, critical thinking skills, and the ability to analyse and synthesise complex data, preparing them for high-level academic or professional roles.

Global Relevance: With a focus on global trends and challenges, the programme prepares graduates to address issues such as climate resilience, urbanisation, and the adoption of international building standards and technologies.

Flexible Study Options: Designed for working professionals, the programme offers flexible study modes, combining both in-persons and online sessions, enabling students to balance their education with professional commitments.

By enrolling in this programme, students join a community of scholars and practitioners dedicated to pushing the boundaries of building technology knowledge. This programme is not just an academic pursuit; it is an opportunity to shape the future of the built environment and make a lasting impact on the way buildings are designed, constructed, and operated worldwide. Join us in driving innovation, sustainability, and excellence in building technology.

The MPhil Building Programme is a two (2) academic year programme. Within this period, students are required to pass all courses and obtain a minimum of 12 credit hours before graduating. Students who already have a Masters degree certificate in a Building Technology related field will be deemed to have satisfied the 12 credit hour requirement.

Students will also be required to take 8 compulsory modules relevant to the award. These 8 modules are structured such that, three (3) examinable and one (1) non-examinable modules are taken in the first semester of the first year. One (1) examinable and one (1) none-examinable module would be taken in the second semesters of the first year. One (1) module, the research module is taken in the first semester and continued in the second semester of the second year. In the final semester of the second year, students will be required to continue their research work/dissertation with a series of seminars.
